Specialized Treatments

Pediatric physiotherapy tailors treatment to a child’s age, ability, injury or disorder. Our patients receive one-on-one care with highly skilled registered therapists. They take time to get to know your child and develop individualized programs addressing their needs. Some patients may require specialized treatments to address unique conditions or treat specific injuries.

Cuevas Medek Exercise (CME)

Cuevas Medek Exercise (CME) is a treatment technique created by Chilean physiotherapist Ramon Cuevas. It is a specific set of exercises that do not rely on active participation from your child. With CME, the therapist moves your child’s body to provoke a movement response. The movements being provoked are movements your child cannot do or are incredibly difficult to complete. These movements are focused on postural and protective reactions. They are subconscious reflexes that we all have to hold our bodies upright against gravity. This includes keeping your head and body upright to sit or stand. This also includes putting your hand down or stepping with your foot to prevent you from falling.

Many children who have a motor goal can benefit from CME. This includes children with a gross motor delay, as well as children with cerebral palsy, spina bifida, seizure disorder, children with traumatic brain injury or certain non-degenerative genetic disorders. After assessing your child, our CME-trained therapists will let you know if your child would best benefit from this type of therapy.

Acupuncture and Dry Needling

Acupuncture and Dry Needling can be helpful techniques in treating muscle and joint issues. Both methods use fine, sterile, disposable needles inserted in the skin to alleviate pain, but there are slight differences between the two. Acupuncture is deeply rooted in traditional Chinese medicine. It helps to decrease pain by stimulating the release of endorphins, promoting a decrease in inflammation and relief from pain by penetrating the skin with a fine needle. Dry Needling aims to relieve trigger points, or hard “knots” in the muscle that cause discomfort and limit function.

Goals of Treatments

Reduce muscle tension
Improve pain
Speed up rehabilitation

Motor Vehicle Accidents

Were you and your newborn or child in a motor vehicle accident? A variety of injuries can occur due to a motor vehicle accident. Some, like broken bones, are obvious, but soft-tissue damage or whiplash can be less apparent and take several days to appear.  At CYP, we know what’s “normal” for infants and young children and can provide you with an appropriate assessment and effective treatment strategies.

Physiotherapy can treat stiffness and pain in the neck and back due to whiplash, headaches, sprains and strains, post-fracture stiffness and weakness, and concussion.
