Pediatric Massage Therapy

Pediatric massage is a well-established practice in cultures worldwide for its many benefits to infants, children, and adolescents. It fosters well-being and establishes a foundation for lifelong body positivity and health. Some may think pediatric massage is only a treatment for injuries or conditions, but it has evolved into preventative and maintenance care. It can also comfort children experiencing conditions such as torticollis, muscle aches, or constipation.

At CYP, our pediatric massage therapist takes a hands-on approach, using gentle techniques that are safe and effective for infants and children. Following a comprehensive assessment and thorough understanding of a child’s medical history, therapy is customized to meet each patient’s unique requirements.

Notably, children are not required to remove their clothing before receiving a massage, as most massages are conducted with the child fully clothed. However, depending on their age and ability to lie comfortably on the table, children may choose to undress if desired. Children are never expected to remain still during treatment. They are encouraged to engage in activities like colouring or playing with toys to maintain their attention and enjoyment.

Regardless of the reason behind choosing a pediatric massage, children and adolescents begin to experience its benefits and want to return for more. Here are some conditions and issues that can benefit from massage therapy:

Torticollis
Toe Walking
Constipation
Reflux and “Colic”
Relaxation and Regulation
Sleep Issues
Latch Issues
Postural Concerns (scoliosis/hyperkyphosis/text neck)
Muscle Tightness and Tension
Sports Injuries
Motor Vehicle Accidents

Pediatric Massage

Pediatric massage provides children with a good therapeutic touch. There are many ways to give a good touch, such as through songs, stories, or relaxing with their favourite stuffed animal.

Pediatric massage can look like a traditional massage on the table with oil, but it can also be very different. Each child can choose treatment from pressure, music, body regions, and clothing.

The techniques used depend on the age and cognition of the child or adolescent. Sensory play, massage stories, or songs are always great tools for children who don’t like to sit still.

Pediatric massage offers children a therapeutic touch through various methods, such as songs, stories, or their favourite stuffed animals. While it may resemble traditional table massage with oil, the approach can vary based on the child’s preferences, including pressure, music, body regions, and clothing. Techniques adapt to the child’s age and cognitive development, with sensory play, massage stories, or songs particularly effective for those who prefer movement.
