Risky Play - Brainasium

Telus Spark’s Brainasium (Christina Ryan / Calgary Herald)

Calgary Youth Physiotherapy believes that children not only learn through instruction but through movement experience and exposure to environments where play is undirected.

Undirected play experiences lead to more creativity on the child’s part. By playing in less directed environments, children learn to assess situations in their environment, determine options, evaluate risks, and learn to interact with that environment in a playful and safe manner.

Allowing your child to discover ways to interact with a simple ball, sheet, cardboard box, log, hillside, or stick can lead to hours of enjoyment and fun for your child! My kids played outside with an old sheet in the wind for 2 hours, and came back in happy, exhausted, and full of knowledge about the wind, their bodies, and how to play creatively!

Bring the fun back into play! Read about and visit the Telus Spark Brainasium, and then consider how you can improve the “risky play” in your home and community environment.

Mural on back wall-croppedWelcome to Calgary Youth Physiotherapy Fitness Classes and if you are returning to our classes, thank you for your continued participation over the past year!

In an attempt to service our clients more effectively, we are continually looking for a model of service delivery that best serves their individual needs. As a result, in the upcoming year (2015-16) we are offering the following classes:

FIT WITH FRIENDS (12 weeks)

Wednesdays 4:45 – 5:30PM

These classes have been implemented to improve the physical well-being of those clients that require extra assistance and that are not best serviced in another class. There will be 4 – 5 spots available in this class, and determination of appropriate suitability for the class will be discussed prior to registration. Goals of the class include maintaining mobility, building strength, and increasing overall fitness in a fun and social environment, with support.

STRONG TOGETHER (12 weeks)

Wednesdays 5:30pm – 6:15PM

These classes have been implemented to service those clients that are able to participate with a higher level of independence. There will be 8-9 spots available in this class, and determination of appropriate suitability for the class will be discussed prior to registration. Goals of the class include targeting specific individuals’ needs with stretching and strengthening programs, as well as group based sport specific activities.

*In all cases, a client that is new to Calgary Youth Physiotherapy and or new to the classes will require an assessment prior to registration.

*An important aspect of the classes is that the participants learn about their own body’s needs and start building life knowledge on how to independently achieve good fitness, mobility, function and sport specific goals.
